On Friday, the Indian rupee fell 18 paise to breach the 86-mark against the US dollar for the first time, closing at 86.04. Reacting to this milestone, Priyanka Gandhi criticized the government’s handling of the economy in a post shared in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter).
“The rupee has reached its lowest value ever against the dollar. For the first time in history, one dollar equals 86.4 rupees,” she stated.
Priyanka also recalled remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the tenure of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, when the dollar was valued at ₹58-59. At that time, Modi had linked the rupee’s value to the government’s credibility, saying, “I know everything. The currency of any country cannot fall like this.”
“Now, as prime minister, he has presided over a historic decline of the rupee. He owes an explanation to the people of this country,” she added.
The Congress leader’s remarks have reignited debates over economic management and the impact of currency fluctuations on the Indian economy.
